Sports, Orthopedic, & General Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy helps the patient restore the use of muscles, bones and the nervous system through the use of heat, cold, massage, whirlpool baths, ultrasound, neuro-muscular electrical stimulation, exercise and many other techniques. It seeks to relieve pain, improve strength and mobility, and train the patient to perform everyday tasks. It may be prescribed to rehabilitate a patient after amputation, joint replacement, arthritis, burns, cancer, cardiac disease, cervical and lumbar dysfunction, neurological problems, orthopedic injuries and degeneration, pulmonary disease, spinal cord injuries, stroke, traumatic brain injuries and other injuries/illnesses.

Each physical therapy program is tailored to the individual patient's needs and can include one or more types or therapy and modalities. The patient's physician usually coordinates with the efforts of the physical therapist to decide on the best program and the frequency/duration of treatment. The duration of the program depends on the injury/illness being treated and the patient's response to to therapy.

Physical therapists work with athletes to design specific conditioning programs for different sports. Many sports require a balance of superior body mechanics and flexibility. They also require a combination of speed and strength. Individualized care plans are a hallmark of Physical Therapy.

Physical Therapy is teaching more than telling an athlete how to recover. PT’s role as an educator is essential to achieving successful outcomes. And because “success” for a PT is defined as success for his or her patient, it’s clear that partnership with a PT is a winning proposition, not only for athletes, but also for anyone else who wants to achieve his or her personal best.
